Dear Prospective Competitors
We trust many of you will have seen the announcement from Rally New Zealand issued this morning (attached). It explains a number of key revisions to the P-WRC structure for 2010 that will be proposed to the World Motor Sport Council on 11 December. In summary, they are:
- For the 2010 Production car WRC for Drivers (P-WRC), only Group N cars would be eligible.
- A new S2000 World Rally Championship for Drivers (S-WRC)would be created for 2010. For this new series, only S2000 cars would be eligible.
- The P-WRC and S-WRC would be run as separate classifications and each series will crown its own World Champion in 2010.
- The WRC Cup for Teams (announced in June) will be a classification for team entrants using Super 2000 cars.
- The Calendar of the P-WRC announced in October is unchanged (see
http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/wmsc/2009/Pages/wmsc_211009.aspx#). Competitors will have to nominate 6 out of 9 events. The WRC Commission has decided that in 2010 these 6 events should include 2 events outside of Europe.
- The Calendar of the S-WRC will follow the calendar of the WRC Cup for Teams as announced in October. Competitors will have to nominate 7 out of 10 events. The WRC Commission has decided that in 2010 these 7 events should include 2 events outside of Europe.
- S-WRC Team Entrants that would be interested in the WRC Cup for Teams should complete a separate entry form for the WRC Cup and competitors will have to nominate 7 out of 10 events. The WRC Cup will count 1-car teams.
- The calendar for the Junior WRC for Drivers (J-WRC) remains unchanged. Entrants will have to nominate 5 out of the 6 events on the calendar.
Subject to the approval of the World Motor Sport Council, the regulations and entry forms are expected to be published on the FIA web-site on or around 14 December. Closing date for entries will be 4 January 2010, although late entries can be accepted at the discretion of the FIA.
These changes would be a pro-active step aimed at giving the two classes the best possible footing for a fair sporting contest and come as a quick response to concerns over the growing performance gap between Group N and S2000 cars. It would also provide stability for those competitors considering ongoing investment in either Group N and/or S2000 cars. P-WRC will once again be the world’s premier series for Production Cars as it has been since 1987 and S-WRC will be the herald for the next generation of World Rally Cars.
