Co-driver Stephane Prevot has tipped Evgeny Novikov to excel when he makes his long-awaited return to the World Rally Championship in Mexico next week.
The 20-year-old Novikov became one of the sport’s hottest properties with a series of sensational drives in a Citroen Junior Team C4 WRC during 2009.
Following a season spent competing in his domestic rally championship in 2010, Russian Novikov returns to the world stage in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC run by the British M-Sport operation.
And Prevot, who will navigate Novikov on what is currently a six-event deal, says the opportunity to partner the youngster again has made him highly motivated ahead of the Leon-based gravel rally, which runs from 3-6 March.
“For sure he can be very fast and his potential is 200 per cent,” said Belgian Prevot. “He does not have the experience of many of the other drivers and the deal for Mexico is quite late so he does not know the car. But his talent is known and I am very motivated to have this opportunity to work with him again.”
Novikov forged a reputation for being ultra quick but, at times, prone to making mistakes as he adapted to the rigours of driving the old-generation World Rally Cars in competition for the first time two seasons ago.
“He’s still young and if he can be patient and use this season to learn again then he can be very good,” said Prevot, 42. “But the driver is the boss and if he feels he can go for the win then I will do the best job I can to help him.”
Like Prevot, M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson is also a fan of the Russian. He said: “There’s no question that he’s got huge potential. He’s also got a very experienced co-driver so it’s a very promising combination.”
Novikov’s full programme beyond Rally Guanajuato Mexico has yet to be announced.
